In a move previously unseen in professional sports, Dana White and the Ultimate Fighting Championship are taking pay-per-view events and giving them away for free on network television. Details were released earlier today regarding a partnership between the Fox Broadcasting Company and the UFC, which has evidently been in the works for several years. The sport of mixed martial arts is now one step closer to being sanctioned in the state of New York.

The New York Senate recently voted 42-18 to approve Bill S1707A – a piece of legislation that pushed martial arts one step closer to being regulated in New York. This is obviously a great sign for the legalization of mixed martial arts in New York, however the legislation still has to pass through the New York State Assembly.

UFC President Dana White left fighters and fans alike quite surprised when he recently announced that Zuffa Entertainment, the parent company of the UFC, purchased Strikeforce in early March.

White stated that the organizations will remain separate for the time being, but that future deals could incorporate fights between the two organizations. And if history repeats itself, the two organizations will likely merge.

In 2011, mixed martial arts fans will finally see the merger of the WEC and UFC into a single brand. Zuffa, the company who owns the UFC, purchased WEC in 2006 but ran both companies as separate entities. Beginning next year, the WEC roster will be merged into the UFC to unify the brands.

It was recently announced that Frank Mir and Brendan Schaub have agreed to fight each other in 2011. The tentative scheduling pencils the fight in somewhere in March, which would be UFC 129.

Brendan Schaub was a notable contender on The Ultimate Fighter: Heavyweights after being coached by Rashad Evans all the way to the final.
